Poker is a card game that can be played by two or more people. Players place bets based on their perceived strength of their hand, and the person with the highest-ranked hand wins the pot (the sum of all bets placed during any one deal). Some people win by making apparent bluffs; others by simply calling bets from players with superior hands.
The rules of poker are generally agreed upon by the players at a table. The game may be played with as few as two people, but the ideal number is 6 to 8 players. There are many variations of the game, but most share certain essential characteristics.
To begin a hand, each player must either open or check. To open means to bet the amount of the last player’s bet or raise it. To check is to not bet, although you may say “I call” if you want to raise the last person’s bet.
The highest poker hand is a royal flush, which consists of five consecutive cards of the same rank. Other high hands include a straight, three of a kind, and two pair. Two pair is made up of two matching cards, such as A44434 or AA7422, plus another unmatched card called the kicker. Low hands consist of non-matched cards, or just one card. The kicker is the card that makes or breaks a winning hand. A good kicker can make even a bad hand very strong.
