The first slot machine was created by New York-based company Sittman and Pitt in 1891. The contraption consisted of five drums with a total of 50 playing cards, and winning was achieved by lining up poker hands. However, forces of morality and the clergy often opposed gambling machines, and in 1909, San Francisco banned them entirely. This led the owners to create their own versions of the machine, allowing purchases and payouts to be made surreptitiously. Charles Fey’s version, called the Liberty Bell, featured three spinning reels and symbols such as diamonds, spades, horseshoes, hearts, and liberty bells. The latter gave the machine its name, and it proved immensely popular.
